Mall Interview

Reporter, Fran, Emma, I.N., Carol, Shawn
Reporter:
I'm on location at a Mall, to find out what people are buying, and why they are buying what they are buying, which we'll soon find out. Ah, here's comes someone now.
Fran:
(mumbling) Yes, um, that, and then, oh that too...
Reporter:
Hello, I'm Donald Bringhammer. I'm a reporter, and I'd like to ask you a few questions. Who are you shopping for today?
Fran:
Who? Who am I shopping for?
Reporter:
I don't know.
Fran:
Oh, yes, I know. I'm so sorry. My name is Fran Zee and I'm shopping for Aron, Betty Cathy, Dan, Edger, Fred, Garry, Harry...
Reporter:
Wait! That's a lot of people.
Fran:
That's a lot of shopping, and I'd better be going.
Reporter:
Yes, I guess you'd better. Thank you for your time.
Fran:
Yes, oh boy, An apple for Aron, a bag for Betty, cookies for Cathy, diamonds for Dan – diamonds? No way...
Reporter:
Now that's a busy lady, and although some questions have been answered still more remain. Why is she buying presents for all those people? Why does she have one friend for each letter of the alphabet? And does she always buy gifts that start with the same letter as the recipients first name? Yes there are still many questions. Excuse me, I'm Donald Bringhammer. I'm a reporter, may I ask you a few questions?
Emma:
Actually, I need...
Reporter:
Thank you, who are you shopping for?
Emma:
If you must know, I'm shopping for Al Ready Gave.
Reporter:
And why are you shopping for him?
Emma:
Well because he gave me a gift last year, and he'll probably give me a gift this year.
Reporter:
So you feel like you have to.
Emma:
Well, yes. Any more questions?
Reporter:
One more...what's your name?
Emma:
Emma Hasto – may I go?
Reporter:
Yes, thanks for your time. Excuse me sir. I'm Donald Bringhammer.
Must:
Name's I. N. Must. Howde!
Reporter:
I'm a reporter. I'd like to ask you a few questions?
Must:
Ask away partner.
Reporter:
Who you're shopping for?
Must:
I'm shopping for my nephew. Great kid, want to see a picture?
Reporter:
No thanks, why are you getting a gift for him?
Must:
'Cause he's my nephew, I'm supposed to.
Reporter:
Is that right? Thank you.
Carol:
I know, I know, you want to know who I'm shopping for.
Reporter:
Well, yes. Who are you?
Carol:
I'm Carol Less. I'm just shopping for a few friends.
Reporter:
What did you get them?
Carol:
Oh, I don't know. Some stuff I saw some place. It doesn't matter – it's the thought that counts.
Reporter:
It doesn't seem like there's much. (pause) Thought.
Carol:
Yea, whatever, see ya I guess.
Shawn:
Hi!
Reporter:
Oh, hi, I'm Donald Bringhammer. I'm a reporter. I'd like to know who you're shopping for.
Shawn:
Sure Don.
Reporter:
That's Donald.
Shawn:
Oh, sorry. I'm Shawn Love.
Reporter:
Donald Bringhammer.
Shawn:
Right, you said that already.
Reporter:
Oh, sorry.
Shawn:
You wanted to know who I'm shopping for?
Reporter:
Yes I did.
Shawn:
I'm shopping for...
Reporter:
Wait, let me guess. I suppose someone gave you a gift and you feel like you have to give one in return.
Shawn:
Oh no, I'm getting a gift for my brother. I'm not getting it for him because he gave something to me. I giving it to him because...
Reporter:
Because he's your brother, and you feel like you have to. Right?
Shawn:
No, I'm getting it for him because I love him. Not because I have to.
Reporter:
What are you going to get him?
Shawn:
I'm not sure yet. I'm still looking. I want to make sure I'm getting him something that he'll like.
Reporter:
Hmm. You're not like most of the other shoppers in the mall today. One woman – Emma Hasto – was just buying a gift because some one already got one for her. I. N. Must, he was getting a gift for his nephew – because he was supposed to, after all it was his nephew. And Carol Less? She got presents for her friends – she couldn't care less, she didn't care what she got – in fact she didn't even remember.
Shawn:
Wow, that reminds me of exactly what Christmas isn't all about.
Reporter:
What do you mean?
Shawn:
Well, Christmas is all about God's gift to us – Jesus. He didn't give that gift because we gave Him something – He didn't give that gift because He though He had to. And it certainly wasn't a thoughtless gift. He gave us that gift because He loved us, and He gave us the best gift ever. That type of giving is what Christmas is all about.
Reporter:
Thank you very much Shawn – an excellent point. There you have it. You've seen who people are getting gifts for and why they're getting them for those who their getting them for. Join us later for an in depth look at the dangers of wrapping paper. Until then – good by.
